Botanical infusions are natural blends for your health

Botanical infusions are often referred to as tea –which isn’t surprising since it’s what most of us are familiar with. Technically speaking though, true teas are made from the leaves of a specific plant, Camellia sinensis, and only include black, green, white, oolong, and pu-erh in its roster. Using other plants and plant parts then takes us to the domain of botanical or herbal infusions. Containing leaves, barks, roots, seeds, flowers, and fruits of different plants that are valued for their therapeutic properties, botanical infusions have a long history that dates back to ancient China and Egypt where they were served as drinks for both enjoyment and medicinal purposes. Popular for its signature Botanic Infusions, Filipino plant-based brand Sekaya, helps breakdown what botanical in...

Parkinson’s disease could be treated with natural food ingredients – study

Researchers have found that sesaminol, "purified from industrial sesame seed by-product," can be used to prevent the onset of Parkinson's disease, Osaka City University (OCU) announced late last month. The Japan-based research group said that while there is no cure-all for Parkinson's, the preventative treatment could be used to prevent neuronal damage that would decrease the production of dopamine. In vitro studies have already shown that sesaminol has a number of beneficial factors when it comes to handling oxidative stress, and in vivo experiments have shown that a steady portion of the sesame by-product in a person's diet increase the production of dopamine and motor function capabilities, according to the university. “Currently there is no preventive medicine for Parkinson's ...

Appetites growing for intermittent fasting

I haven't seen one in a while. I'm doing intermittent fasting. I've always thought that sounded a bit random. Like "accidental hero" or "scattered showers". There's nothing random about not eating for 16 hours a day. It takes solid willpower. Just ask Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Aniston and many, many more who swear by the 16:8 eating plan. Jennifer Aniston says she doesn't eat in the mornings - just coffee and celery juice. But haven't we been taught that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Well, you can now step away from the cereal. Recent studies contradict the traditional advice to "kickstart your metabolism" in the morning with a hearty feed. There's no solid evidence that skipping breakfast ...

Natural Food Ingredient May Treat Parkinson’s Disease

Sesaminol - a chemical abundantly found in empty and waste-thrown shells of sesame, reveals protective effects against Parkinson's disease, as per a study at Osaka City University. Sesame seed oil (known for its nutty aroma and high burn-point) is made by extracting the fatty oils from sesame seeds with the empty shells thrown out as waste. The findings fit the age old saying - "one man's trash is another man's treasure". Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects movement due to loss of nerve cells - neurons that produce a chemical messenger (neurotransmitter) in the brain called dopamine (black substance). It is mostly caused due to oxidative stress i.e., neurons in the brain come under extreme pressure from an imbalance between antioxidants ...

The Positive Uses of Natural Herb Kratom

A survey of Kratom users is conducted around the U.S. of more than 2,700 people has self-reported. The natural herb is sold in the market, and even online by which is treated as a supplement because of its therapeutic effects. John Hopkins Medicine researchers had concluded that the herb contains a psychoactive compound similar to opioids which can treat anxiety, depression, pain, and addiction. However, those self-reporting surveys are not confirmed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) thus suggests drug agencies seek further studies of Kratom potential as an alternative for opioid use. Users of Kratom these days have reached over 10 million people in the U.S, as estimated by the American Kratom Association (AKA). They consume its ground leaves or brew as tea. In other words, ...

Is orange juice REALLY as bad for you as Diet Coke?

You’ve probably seen the sensational media headlines in the last few days telling you to ditch the humble OJ and opt for a Diet Coke instead - and if you’re confused by it, I don’t blame you. So, I thought I’d throw in my own two cents to try and help you make sense of the whole conundrum. The cause of this ruckus is the impending changes to the algorithm the government’s Health Star rating system is based on. The changes will see 100 per cent fruit juice dethroned from its five star status to just three and a half stars, or less. To give you some context, that’s the same score given to Diet Coke.
