Is the Wellness Industry Too White?

The Black Lives Matter movement has had an immense impact on me. Aside from helping to shine a glaring light on the biases in our society, it has made me look at my own industry and, inevitably, the pronounced whiteness of wellness studios both here and abroad. I used to organize fitness camps for hundreds of women from across Quebec; we’d run in the woods and practise yoga by the St. Lawrence River. I would lead groups in Montreal every week. The purpose of these events was always the same: to bring together like-minded women who want to take care of their bodies and connect with themselves through physical movement—a goal that I naively thought of as inclusive and unifying. I now see very clearly that the vast majority of the women who attended were white. Keep reading at Elle....

My Upbringing Introduced Me to the Healing Power of Natural Home Remedies

No matter how big or small the ailment, someone in my family always has a remedy for it. As a child, at the first possible sign of a sore throat, my mother would bring water to a boil, pour it into a mug, add vinegar and salt, then, when warm, have me gargle the mixture. She used a similar saltwater cocktail when I lost my first tooth. I swished the warm concoction around the gummy space that once held my tooth to stop the bleeding and help the area heal. If I had a cough, she’d slice a lemon, squeeze the juice from each slice into a mug, warm it up, and add a dollop of honey. The tart, sweet, mix helped soothe my throat and chest while breaking down any mucous. Though I didn’t realize it while growing up, these remedies were evidence that wellness was always within reach. Plant-based diets critical to wildlife preservation: report

The global food system is the biggest driver of destruction of the natural world, and a shift to predominantly plant-based diets is crucial in halting the damage, according to a report. Agriculture is the main threat to 86 per cent of the 28,000 species known to be at risk of extinction, the report by the Chatham House think tank said. Without change, the loss of biodiversity will continue to accelerate and threaten the world’s ability to sustain humanity, it said. The root cause is a vicious circle of cheap food, the report said, where low costs drive bigger demand for food and more waste, with more competition then driving costs even lower through more clearing of natural land and use of polluting fertilizers and pesticides. The report, supported by the UN Environment Programme ...

From Fashion To Flower To Foreplay: Brett Heyman On Flower By Edie Parker’s Move Into Sexual Wellness

CBD is booming business; amidst the heightened stress of the past year, people can’t get enough of cannabidiol in all forms. The breakout and anxiety-relieving benefits of CBD specifically have catapulted cannabis products into the mainstream—by 2025, the CBD skincare market is estimated to reach a value of $1.7 billion, according to Grand View Research. But the de-stigmatization of cannabis remains dependent on viewing it through a health and wellness lens; few brands embrace the act of getting high. “Yes, there are lots of health and wellness benefits [to cannabis] but people talk about that already,” Brett Heyman, the founder of cannabis accessory line Flower by Edie Parker, tells Forbes. “Our brand headline is ‘for a good time;’ there is no shame in wanting to get high.” Since launc...

Herbs for a cure: How bronchitis led to a beauty company’s creation

When Lynn Kirkland started her skincare company, The Herb Farm, (initially called Herbal Harmony when it was in the “cupboard” stages) her son Craig was suffering from consistent, painful bronchitis. Nothing seemed to stop it from returning. “Mum says the pivotal turning point for her was when she went back again to the doctor and said ‘what else can we do, because this isn’t working?’ and the doctor shrugged his shoulders and said ‘I don’t know,’” says Lynn’s daughter, The Herb Farm managing director Sarah Cowan. “She thought, ‘that’s not good enough. There must be something else.’ And she had always been interested in nature, so that was her first port of call. What can nature offer?” Kirkland began studying a herbal medicine diploma through correspondence, from the Australasian Coll...

This Natural Food Coloring Packs a Seriously Vibrant Punch

Here’s my thing about food coloring: I don’t use it when I’m trying to be subtle. I think the whole point of adding dye to a baked good or cooking project is to create something bright and a little wacky, like swirly icing or ombre layer cookies, in surprising and unexpected shades. Cake the color of regular cake is great on its own, so if you’re going to add pigment, you might as well go big. This mentality kept me from jumping on the natural food coloring bandwagon for years, despite a desire to leave the artificial stuff behind. With plant-based dye, it seemed impossible to achieve anything other than muted pink, swampy green, and almost-orange—hints at color, little whispers of color, but nothing like the wild, punchy hues I'd hoped for. The ‘healthy’ foods you should avoid if you want to lose weight

We all know that in order to lose weight we generally need to eat a balanced diet coupled with exercise. But those diets can often include “healthy foods” such as smoothies and brown rice, which one expert has said you should never eat if you actually want to lose weight. Australian dietitian Susie Burrell said many people overindulge on foods that are branded healthy options which often have lower calorie counts and are low fat, The Sun reports. Writing on her blog she said often the actual nutritional profile of these foods, such as the amount of sugar per serving, can often mean we are consuming more than we should be. She warned there are five foods that you should steer clear of if you want to lose weight. Find out what they are at news.com.au.
