Botanicals and beyond: How Australia’s National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine is bridging science and tradition

Speaking on the first Nutrachampion podcast for the year 2023, Professor Jon Wardle aired his views on the topmost priorities in advancing the development and use of integrative or complementary medicine alongside conventional medical therapies. Established in 2020, the NCNM aims to improve health by facilitating access to both integrative and conventional medicines. On top of conducting research, the centre promotes the development of integrative medicine by introducing and training health care practitioners, such as general practitioners, to take an integrative approach in their medical practise, says the Maurice Blackmore chair of naturopathic medicine and professor of public health at Southern Cross University. Evidence-Based Wellness Emerges as an Industry

The ultimate goal for doctors, medical device manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, insurance companies and other health-care organizations is to help each of us lead a longer, healthier life. But at present, incentives in the industry put too much emphasis on treatment and not enough on wellness and prevention. Supplements You Shouldn’t Overuse, Say Experts: Zinc, Iron and More

The supplement and vitamin market in the US has never been more profitable, being worth over $37 billion in 2022—but the FDA still classifies supplements as a subcategory of food, which can lead to safety issues. "This has huge consequences for the whole category of dietary supplements—from vitamins, minerals, probiotics and all sorts of new ingredients," says Pieter Cohen, MD, internist at Cambridge Health Alliance and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. "What it means is that the manufacturer can introduce anything into the market that they believe is safe. The FDA's job is to identify the products that are causing harm after they've been on the market and remove them from store shelves… Because the FDA isn't vetting these products before they show up on store shel...

Botanical immune boosters with a side of zinc

For years, the average consumer had a vague, abstract understanding of the immune system. But 2020 served as a global Immune Health 101 class, creating consumers that recognized the importance of a lifestyle comprised of proper nutrition, exercise and stress management. What’s more, broader acceptance of a lifestyle promoting immune health helped consumers develop habits lasting longer than just “flu season” as they now aim to bolster their health through the entire year. “Immune Health: Special Report 2020” from Nutrition Business Journal (NBJ) indicated that although vitamins and minerals continue to lead in sales, herb and botanical blends are picking up speed.
