Goodbye dark patches: 6 natural remedies that will make you want to flaunt your underarms confidently

A tropical country like India where summer tends to last all year makes you want to wear sleeveless clothes all the time. But the majority of us refrain from this type of clothing, afraid of the dark patches in our underarms that people might notice whenever we lift our arms (a serious embarrassment). We often tend to forget to care for those underarms that rarely cause any trouble other than sweating. But the sensitive skin of the armpits can lead to rashes, pimples, ingrown hair if neglected. Several factors lead to the darkness of the underarms. The chemical in deodorants that we use to keep us fresh causes discolouration. Obesity, shaving, friction from clothes, build-up of dead cells, certain medications and even smoking contribute to discolouration. Don't worry, we bring you some ho...

Is organic food really better for you? The hidden truths about your fruit and veggies

The best commute I've ever had started in the pre-dawn darkness. Some days it was a struggle to shake off my sleep, but the view of the rising sun above the mist-shrouded Tennessee hills was a comforting sight. The only thing missing was the crow of a rooster, so the farm dogs compensated with wagging tails. After parking in a gravel lot beside the barn, the first step was to pull on my boots. I spent two summers working on an organic farm near Nashville. It taught me countless life lessons and introduced me to the most down-to-earth people I've ever known. I witnessed firsthand the meticulous cultivation of food as it traveled from the soil to a customer's hand. I learned how to produce the food that feeds communities across the US. Before working there, I'd say I was obsessed with orga...

Philippines Approves Golden Rice

The golden rice saga began in 1999 when researchers developed a genetically modified version of rice that produces beta-carotene (hence the yellow or “golden” color), which is a precursor to vitamin A. Finally, last month the Philippines approved golden rice, which is now cleared to be planted by farmers. The reason for the two-decade delay was mostly regulatory, and caused by ideological opposition to genetically modified organisms (GMOs), not based in science or evidence. The story reflects some important basic principles in public health. Golden rice was developed to fight vitamin A deficiency, which remains a serious problem in many parts of the world. The prevalence of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is about 140 million worldwide, with 250,000 – 500,000 children going blind every year fr...

The 5 Best Natural Remedies for a Cough, According to a Doctor

When you're in the middle of a coughing attack, gasping for breath or struggling to sleep, you can feel helpless to do anything to make it stop. Not even pharmaceuticals are of much help: A November 2014 Cochrane review revealed that over-the-counter cough meds performed no better than a placebo. But get this: Some natural remedies can work surprisingly well. The next time a persistent cough interferes with your shut-eye, job productivity or just everyday living, try one of these "hacks" to soothe your symptoms. Listen up, honey: This folksy remedy can put the brakes on a cough. In an April 2021 review in the British Medical Journal, honey was determined to reduce cough frequency and severity better than over-the-counter cough syrup. And an August 2012 study...

What is ‘natural’? Updated Food Labeling Modernization Act wades into one of the most contentious issues in food marketing

The Food Labeling Modernization Act - an updated version of a bill first introduced in 2018 that was designed to help consumers make more informed purchases – has been introduced to the House and the Senate. The 35-page bill directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to establish a single, standard front-of-package nutrition labeling system "that clearly distinguishes between products of greater or lesser nutritional value." This would involve warning symbols for products high in saturated or trans fats, sodium, added sugars, "and any other nutrients the consumption of which should be limited or discouraged; and a stop-light, points, star, or other commonly recognized signaling system to scale or rank foods according to their overall health value." It also wades ...

It makes business sense to be GMO-free

OPINION: Are we on the brink of doing the wrong thing for all the right reasons? I fear that there is an alliance developing, almost by stealth, that will foist genetically modified organisms (GMO) on New Zealand. The impetus appears to be the need to develop solutions for predator control, or for climate change – through the creation of sterile genes to wipe out, say, possums, or of crops that can resist drought conditions or reduce methane emissions. Silver bullets to provide easy solutions, so we can go on our merry way without changing our behaviours too much. This dangerous short-term thinking needs to be challenged. Physics has taught us that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, delicate ecosystem balances should not be toyed with lightly. Look at the damag...

Peloton Is Making Moves Into Corporate Wellness

When a company has multiple ways to make money, investors often say that the company has optionality. Peloton (NASDAQ:PTON) the workout-at-home company, has recently announced its getting into corporate wellness. This could potentially turn into a massive growth opportunity for the brand. On a MotleyFool Live episode recorded on June 30, Fool contributors Brian Feroldi and Brian Stoffel talk about the early results from the initiative. Brian Stoffel: I'm going to move on to a much smaller company, which is Peloton. Peloton's an interesting company because it's one that when it went public, I thought it was one of the most ridiculous things in the world. Like $2500 for a machine and that's it. But the more I learned about it, the more I realized that there's a lot happening here at this ...
