Oregon lawmakers spike bill to regulate kratom

Oregon lawmakers have decided to leave the drug kratom unregulated for now. Kratom is made from the leaves of a tree native to southeast Asia and, when ingested, can have an effect similar to both a stimulant and an opioid. It has become increasingly publicized and available in Oregon. In April, the Senate Judiciary Committee amended a series of rules and restrictions on kratom into an unrelated bill. On Monday, the Joint Ways and Means Committee reversed the earlier action and removed all references to kratom in the bill. The bill would have regulated the production, testing and labeling of kratom and limited its sales to people age 21 and over. Read more at Oregon Live.

Trump Orders Simpler Path for Genetically Engineered Food

NEW YORK—President Donald J. Trump wants to make it easier for genetically engineered plants and animals to enter the food supply, and he signed an executive order this past week directing federal agencies to simplify the “regulatory maze” for producers. The move comes as companies are turning to newer genetic engineering techniques that make it easier to tinker with the traits of plants and animals. Greg Jaffe, biotechnology director at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said the impact of the executive order would depend on the details of how it is carried out by federal agencies. Simply deregulating could make people lose confidence in genetically engineered foods, he said. “There needs to be an assurance of safety for those products,” said Jaffe, who was among thos...

Can Apple Cider Vinegar Treat Gout?

Apple cider vinegar is a sour liquid made from fermented apple products. Many people believe that it is a cure-all for a variety of health conditions, including gout, and some research does suggest that it could be beneficial. Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis that occurs when uric acid crystals build up in the joints. These crystals typically cause redness, pain, and swelling in the joints and tissues surrounding them, especially in the lower limbs. In a 2016 study, researchers gave male rats on a high-fat diet 7 milliliters (ml) of apple cider vinegar per kilogram of body weight each day. After 30 days, there was a significant reduction in the animals' food intake and body weight. In the same study, apple cider vinegar also lowered blood sugar levels and improved serum li...

Castle Rock, which imposed a six-month moratorium on the licensing of new kratom shops while rules were created, has now banned the sale of the herbal supplement to minors. Under the ordinance, which was approved last week, anyone who sells kratom to a minor will face a fine of $300. Kratom is seen by some as a safe, natural alternative to opioid medications. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises against the use of the substance, citing “properties that expose users to the risks of addiction, abuse and dependence.” Read more at the Denver Post.

Colorado town bans underage sale of herbal supplement kratom

A town south of Denver has banned the sale of the herbal supplement kratom to anyone under the age of 18. The Denver Post reports the Castle Rock town council approved an ordinance Tuesday that imposes a $300 fine on anyone caught selling the substance to minors. The town late last year imposed a six-month moratorium on the licensing of any new kratom shops while new rules were established. Kratom, which is derived from the leaves of a tree that grows in southeast Asia, often is used in the form of an extract or a pill. Many see it as a safe, natural alternative to opioid painkillers. But the Food and Drug Administration says it exposes users to the risks of addiction, abuse and dependence. Read more at The Denver Channel.
