Americans Use Pandemic to Get In Shape With More Organic Food

Americans are shelling out more for premium foods, including organic meat and snacks, as the pandemic moves them to focus on health despite the economic slowdown. Many consumers are prioritizing nutrition over cost as Covid-19 infections continue to rise across the U.S. Sales of organic food and drinks surged 25% for the 17-week period ended June 27, according to Nielsen data. That’s faster than the pace of total growth in the food segment. Meat, seafood and frozen foods with the organic label have seen some of the largest increases from last year, the data show. “We’re expecting strength to continue in organic and natural food sales,” said Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Jennifer Bartashus. Unfavourable attitudes toward genetically modified food predict negative feelings about other food technologies

Scientists at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) and the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH) have found that people who hold negative opinions of genetically-modified (GM) food are likely to feel the same about nano-enabled food—food with nano-additives to enhance flavour, nutrition or prolong shelf life. In a survey of 1,000 respondents led by NTU comprising adult Singaporeans and permanent residents, close to a third found GM food unappealing, and their negative feelings influenced how they viewed nano-enabled food. Over a third felt neutral about GM food, while the remaining respondents welcomed it. While the study focused specifically on reactions towards nano-enabled foods, lead investigator and NTU Associate Professor Shirley Ho said that ...

Do you need breathing lessons? Ancient techniques are this year’s hottest wellness trend

Take a deep breath in. It’s a command we all hear at times of stress. Somehow we know that, when harnessed correctly, breathing has amazing curative, calming powers. Yet how we each do it varies greatly, and with wildly differing results. In the past three months, how we inhale and exhale has been the subject of breathless discussion. If anything, Covid-19’s affect on the respiratory system has highlighted how uncertain many of us are about how we should be breathing, in spite of the fact that each day we breathe 25,000 times, take in 30lbs of air into our lungs and consume about 1.7lbs of oxygen. Could you be in need of breathing lessons? J K Rowling certainly thought we could all benefit from a few pointers: she shared a video by Dr Sarfaraz Munshi, showing a breathing technique to...
