GMO’s Are In Our Food, But We Aren’t Being Told About Them

In 1996, the first genetically modified organisms (GMOs) were introduced in Canada. Today, there are more than 81 genetically modified foods approved for sale and use in our food products — but you’d never know from reading their labels. In Modified, a documentary from CBC Docs POV, filmmaker Aube Giroux goes on a personal journey to understand more about how GMOs have changed farming and why GMOs aren’t labeled on food products in Canada. “While many countries around the world were choosing to label them, Canada and the United States decided against it,” says Giroux in the film, remembering when the first GMOs came on the market. “So if you wanted to avoid GMOs, you had to become a bit of a detective.” Essentially, GMOs are created when genes are transferred between organisms that c...

When tummy troubles flare, it can be tough to know the best course of action for relief. Though you may reach for an over-the-counter medication as a matter of course to quell stomach pain, many common drugstore meds can come with drawbacks. Still, how do you know which foods, oils, or supplements to trust? A number of folk remedies supposedly relieve stomach pain, but before you spend your money, it’s best to determine what’s based on evidence. 1. Peppermint Oil Peppermint has more to offer than flavoring Christmas candy canes. It can actually serve as a powerful analgesic. “The volatile oils and compounds like menthol that give peppermint its wonderful aroma relax the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract while increasing the flow of bile from the gallbladder, helping your body ...

Monroe County joins growing list of areas banning Kratom

Monroe County is joining several counties and cities in the region to ban the sale of Kratom at convenience and tobacco stores. The addictive product is currently available over the counter at some stores in Monroe County, but during a recent board of supervisors meeting, language was approved to add an ordinance banning Kratom. Representatives from the Crime and Addiction Task Force of the Lowndes County Foundation requested for supervisors to pass the ban. The group previously convinced six other counties and seven cities in North Mississippi to issue Kratom bans, and it plans to make the same request to the Aberdeen and Amory boards of aldermen. “We have documentation where people have $800 a week habits that they’re spending on buying these drugs,” said Lt. Eddie Hawkins of th...

Which Diet Keeps your Heart Healthy?

Diet doesn't have to be a four-letter word. Most of the time, a diet implies weight loss and comes loaded with restrictions and perhaps even plans that aren't very healthy. But new recommendations released recently by a team of health experts refer to diet with a different goal in mind: preventing heart disease and stroke. "We see a lot about diets on the internet, with everyone commenting about which ones are good for you, but tell me, good for what?" said Dr. Amit Khera, one of the authors of the 2019 Guideline on the Primary Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease. "If it's weight loss, sure, some of these diets can help you lose weight, but that does not mean they're heart-healthy." Developed by the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology, the new guidelines...

Gene-edited Foods are Safe, Japanese Panel Concludes

Japan will allow gene-edited foodstuffs to be sold to consumers without safety evaluations as long as the techniques involved meet certain criteria, if recommendations agreed on by an advisory panel yesterday are adopted by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. This would open the door to using CRISPR and other techniques on plants and animals intended for human consumption in the country. “There is little difference between traditional breeding methods and gene editing in terms of safety,” Hirohito Sone, an endocrinologist at Niigata University who chaired the expert panel, told NHK, Japan’s national public broadcaster. Now, Japan appears set to follow the U.S. example. The final report, approved yesterday, was not immediately available, but an earlier draft was posted on the ...

DEA RAISES THE ALARM

A recent study published in Clinical Toxicology revealed that exposure to and use of kratom has dramatically increased over the past 7 years. The herbal supplement often used to overcome opioid pain and withdrawal has now become a drug of concern according to the DEA. It has been a part of the DEA’s list of drugs and chemicals of concern despite it being an herbal supplement. One of the major concerns about kratom is that it has never been approved for medical use by the FDA. But the danger lies in the fact that many believe it is safe because it is made of herbs. But Henry A. Spiller, MS, DABAT, co-author, and director, Central Ohio Poison Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital strongly advise against such misperception. More at Canyon News.
