Consumer Watch: The Nutrition Mistake Messing-up Your Diet

OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) — Most people tend to under eat a specific nutrient that makes them more likely to trip up on their healthy diets, and it’s not about eating more vegetables necessarily, but protein. There are no magic potions here when it comes to losing weight. Ever heard the phrase, you can't outrun your diet? Basically-- working out is great, but what you eat matters more for weight loss. That doesn’t mean reducing your calories by unsafe amount, but it is important to dodge the calorie bombs, you know, the tasty treats. “Protein is the most filling macro nutrient that we have, so if you were to have 200 calories worth of 93/7 beef, 200 calories of rice, or 200 calories of potatoes -- the beef would have you the most full,” says Farris. Eating enough lean protein will mean...

Infants Health At Risk With Genetically Modified Food

Infant foods, Similac Alimentum and Similac Isomil, which are widely used for children with lactose intolerance, have been found to contain genetically modified foods, according to a study carried out by the Centre for Science and Environment. Twenty-five per cent of the samples imported from Netherlands and the US were found to be positive. There was no label to indicate they were GM positive. The study found imported foods like Kellogg’s Froot Loops, American Garden popcorn, Trix Corn Puffs, Mori-Nu-Tofu, Bugles, Karo and Aunt Jemima corn-based syrups were GM positive, as was PromPlus sweet whole kernel corn from Thailand. Mr Amit Khurana from the food safety team at CSE said, “The risk assessment of GM positive foods has shown that there is toxicity, allergic reaction and chang...

Infected with measles? Go The Nature’s Way To Beat It

It is not difficult to understand why the government has been pressing so hard for the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. This because, measles is a highly contagious disease that can be spread by simply breathing in the infected air. While vaccination is the only way to prevent measles, here are some natural ways of curing it, once the virus hits you. Tamarind seeds and turmeric: A mix of equal amount of powdered tamarind seeds and turmeric is an efficient healer of measles. Liquorice: Half a teaspoon of liquorice root ground into powder along with a little drop of honey can cure you effectively from measles. Margosa leaves: With its antiviral and antiseptic properties that adequately beat measles, margosa leaves do wonder in giving you relief from itching due to the ra...

How Does Diet Impact Breast Cancer Risk?

Dietary habits are often said to sway the risk of cancer. Now, a large long-term study confirms the role played by a diet rich in fruits and vegetables in decreasing the risk of breast cancer. A major study published in The BMJ earlier this year showed that people who integrate a lot of ultra-processed foods into their diet have a higher risk of cancer. But recently, a team of researchers from the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, MA, has conducted a large-scale, long-term study investigating in more detail the relationship between fruits and vegetables in a person's diet and their risk of breast cancer. This new study not only suggests that eating a lot of fruits and vegetables can lower breast cancer risk — and the risk of developing aggressive tumors, no les...

Addressing Emotional Wellness In the Workplace

When it comes to employee wellness, a lot of the discussion centers on physical wellness: encouraging employees to increase their physical activity levels, develop healthier eating habits, getting more sleep, etc. In addition to being easier to relate to, these kinds of wellness initiatives produce results that are not only easier to see and quantify (weight loss, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, etc.), but also easier to link to business outcomes, such as reducing insurance costs and absenteeism. Ignoring emotional health – both on a personal level and on an organizational level – can have consequences that are much more concerning than a few moments of awkwardness, such as higher rates of employee burnout, interpersonal conflicts, and decreased productivity. “Emotionally unwel...

Avoiding GMO Food Might Be Tougher Than You Think

While there’s currently no evidence that genetically modified organisms harm human health, that isn’t to say there aren’t legitimate reasons to avoid them. GM experts and proponents also have legitimate concerns that adding a label identifying GMOs gives the impression that there are scientifically proven risks to worry about. Studies on perception of GM food suggests that the public has a baseline aversion, and a label may increase wariness. Labeling advocates, of course, argue that if Americans want to avoid GMOs, they have a right to do so. “Can people avoid them? The answer is certainly yes. Especially in the last few years there have been more products on the market that are non-GMO or organic,” says Jayson Lusk, an economist at Purdue University who studies the consumer side o...

The Dilemma of the Gluten-Free Diet

A new study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows that eating gluten-free is nearly impossible, underscoring the need for better treatments for patients with celiac disease. Experts say up to 1% of the global population has celiac disease, an autoimmune condition in which people develop an immune reaction to gluten. Gluten is a protein that appears in any food containing wheat, barley, and rye. The immune system reaction results in inflammation and damage in the lining of the small intestine, which can lead to medical complications, such as acute stomach pain and failure to absorb nutrients. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition study used data from three prior clinical trials to estimate how much gluten 246 celiac patients were ingesting. The gluten measurements w...

6 Homemade Remedies To Lighten Dark Armpits

There are so many causes of dark underarm that ladies most times do not pay attention to. Some of the main causes of dark underarms are shaving, regular use of hair removing creams, excessive sweating, poor ventilation of underarms, accumulation of dead skin cells, and use of alcohol-based deodorants and antiperspirants. 1. Coconut Oil Coconut oil is another good option to get rid of dark underarms. Coconut oil contains vitamin E that can help lighten the underarms. At the same time, it will also work as an effective natural deodorant. 2. Milk The vitamins and fatty acids present in milk can help minimize underarm darkening. Remedies on Cough Depends On What’s Causing It

Is a cough making your life miserable? Don't blame your body; coughing is the only way your lungs can expel an irritant. The key is to figure what's causing it and then to get your lungs the help they need. "A majority of coughs actually resolve with just rest and home remedies," said Dr. Sharon Horesh Bergquist, an internist at the Emory Clinic in Atlanta. "So that's the place to start unless there are warning signs of something more serious." Home Remedies For a Cough Staying hydrated is the best thing you can do for a cough. Liquids thin out the mucus, making it less irritating to the throat and easier for the lungs to expel. Steam from a hot shower can do the same. Saline or salt water drops or spray are another option to moisten the nasal passages and thin mucus. "Chicken ...

Water Diet: The ‘Most Dangerous Weight Loss Regime Ever’

AS desperate dieters go to extreme lengths to shed the Christmas kilos and slim down for summer, experts have taken aim at a deadly new diet that bans everything but water, tea, and coffee. With the so-called #waterfast diet becoming a potentially fatal fad via social media, body image and eating disorder advocate Mia Findlay warned “starving” your body was the “most dangerous” way to lose weight. “There are a lot of people who do reviews on these so-called diets, and they say they felt so clear-headed, and they felt like they were reaching this state of nirvana, and the reason that is happening is that their bodies are going into starvation mode,” Ms. Findlay said. Meanwhile, eating disorder expert Joanne Labiner said “water fasting” pushed the body to an anorexia-like state, ri...
