Sioux Falls to Enhance Community Wellness with $9 Million Acquisition

The City of Sioux Falls has announced its plan to purchase the Sanford Tea-Ellis Wellness Center for $9 million, aiming to expand indoor recreational offerings and community health resources. This 70,000-square-foot facility will soon offer a diverse range of activities, including indoor aquatics, court sports, multi-generational fitness, and more, complemented by community gathering spaces.

Mayor Paul TenHaken emphasized the collaborative spirit of the acquisition, noting that it leverages the strengths of both the city and Sanford Health to promote a healthier community. Sanford Health will shift some focus towards medically-based services, though it will continue to provide fitness and pool facilities at the Oxbow Wellness Center.

This significant move, set to start operations by year’s end, is contingent on the approval of an Aquatics Bond, with the city council’s decision due next month. This initiative represents a strategic enhancement of the city’s recreational and wellness infrastructure.
