Legislation to legalize so-called “magic mushrooms” cleared the Rhode Island House of Representatives on Monday.
Lawmakers voted 54-11 to pass an amended version of House Bill 5923, introduced by Rep. Brandon Potter, D-Cranston.
The bill would make it legal to possess up to one ounce of psilocybin. It would also allow the drug to be prescribed to patients with “a serious or life-threatening mental or behavioral health disorder,” if the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves such uses.
Psilocybin was banned in the 1970s, but is now seen as a promising treatment for PTSD, depression, and other mental health disorders. Since then, Oregon and Colorado have legalized the use of psilocybin under supervision.
